What is Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)?
Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS is a security standard that can be used to add new devices to a wireless home network easily.
In most home networks, we use WPA or WPA2-Personal security. It uses a pre-shared key to secure network traffic. We set up a passphrase while configuring the router. Later, when we want to connect a device, we select the Wi-Fi network and enter the same passphrase on the device. The router derives an encryption key from the passphrase and uses that encryption key to encrypt the network traffic.
This method is secure enough. But, some users may find the process of adding a new device to the home network inconvenient. To address that concern, Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS was developed.
How does WPS work and why is WPS less secure? In this article, we would discuss that in detail.
