What is vulnerability scanning?

Vulnerability scanning refers to the use of security tools to identify known vulnerabilities in computers, applications, or networks and generating reports about them. The computer programs that are specifically designed for identifying known vulnerabilities in systems, networks, or applications are called vulnerability scanner. Vulnerability scanners are important tools that can detect vulnerabilities that may result from misconfiguration of servers or networks, or programming flaws in software applications.

Vulnerability scanning can be performed by the IT department of an organization. Sometimes third-party security service providers also perform vulnerability scanning to detect known vulnerabilities. Compliance regulators like NIST, PCI DSS, HIPAA, etc. also emphasize vulnerability scanning to identify and eliminate attack vectors. And, cyber attackers often perform vulnerability scanning for identifying known vulnerabilities that they can exploit later.
