What is the Spearman Rank Correlation test?
The Spearman rank correlation test is a method of testing the strength and direction of the correlation between two variables. For example, let’s say we are given the marks of two subjects, Subject 1 and Subject 2, for ten students. And now, we want to know whether there is any relation between the marks obtained in the two subjects. In other words, can we say that if a student is good in subject 1, then he is good in subject 2 also, or if a student is good in subject 1, then he is not good in subject 2? To determine that, we can perform the Spearman rank correlation test.
Please note that the Spearman rank correlation coefficient is the non-parametric version of the Pearson correlation coefficient.
How to calculate the Spearman rank correlation coefficient?
Let’s say we have got the marks obtained by ten students in two subjects – subject 1 and subject 2. Now, we want to know whether there is any correlation between the marks obtained by the students in these two subjects. We can perform the Spearman rank correlation test in this case. To determine the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, we need to perform the following steps:
1. We need to first rank the marks obtained in each subject. We will rank the marks in ascending order.
2. If the marks associated with two or more ranks are the same, we will replace the ranks with the average ranks. For example, if the marks associated with ranks 2, 3, and 4 are the same, we will replace the ranks 2, 3, and 4 with the average rank, i. e., 3.
3. We will now calculate di which is the difference between the ranks for ith student.
