How does the Domain Name System (DNS) work?

When we type a URL in the address bar of the browser, the domain name is resolved into an IP address and the webserver is accessed using the IP address. As remembering the IP address of a server is inconvenient, we use the Domain Name System (DNS) to get the IP address associated with the domain. But, how does Domain Name System (DNS) work?
