Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) is a protocol that is used to authenticate a user or a host to an authenticating entity. This protocol is used by Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) to authenticate network hosts or routers that connect using a PPP link. CHAP is also used by ISPs to authenticate a client to the ISP server before the client gets access to the ISP server and establishes a connection.
