What is Active Directory?

Active Directory is a directory service that stores information about network objects like users, groups, systems, applications, digital assets, etc. and the relationship between these stored objects. Administrators can use Active Directory to create users and provide them access to resources like servers, computers, applications, etc.

Active Directory can actively update data stored in the directory. For example, if an employee leaves an organization, it can automatically replicate the change to all directory services and hence the name.
