What is SAML?

SAML or Security Assertion Markup Language is an open standard that is used to exchange authentication and authorization data between an identity provider and a service provider. A service provider is a service that trusts on an identity provider to authenticate a user.

SAML is an XML-based markup language and it can be used to make security assertions. Service providers use these security assertions to make access-control decisions. SAML is widely used in Single Sign-On or SSO.
