When our mobile phone is lost or stolen, we disable the old SIM card, take a new SIM, and port the old number in the new SIM. Porting the old number to the new SIM card is convenient. The mobile number remains the same, and we do not need to notify others about the new number or change the mobile number in multiple places. But, attackers often take advantage of this mobile number portability for the purpose of phishing, financial fraud, or other cybercrimes. SIM swap scam is a scam in which attackers port the victim’s number in their cell phone and exploit it for cybercrimes.
