Access Control List (ACL)

What is Access Control List (ACL) in networking?

Access Control List or ACL is a network filter that is often used by network devices like routers and switches to control network traffic. ACL can be used on a network interface to control the network traffic passing through the interface. It can thus block unwanted traffic, control access, and reduce the chances of a DoS attack. It can also identify and classify network traffic based on the Quality of Service (QoS) feature, provide bandwidth control, and restrict the content of routing updates. ACL can also control which addresses are translated by a Network Address Translation or NAT device.
