What is a Captive Portal?
Sometimes when we try to access public Wi-Fi in a restaurant, mall, or hotel, we are redirected to a web page that requests login credentials or requests us to accept Terms and Conditions. This type of web page is called a captive portal. A user is captive or unable to access the Internet unless he performs the required actions in a captive portal and hence the name. A captive portal is often used by public Wi-Fi providers to identify a user who is accessing the Wi-Fi. Sometimes it collects user information such as email address, phone number, or login credentials or requests users to accept the terms and conditions while accessing the network.
