What is traceroute?
When a source host sends data to a destination host, the data packets travel through a route or path. The packet travels through a number of routers and devices before actually reaching the destination. Traceroute is a command that is used to display possible routes between the source host and the destination host and transit delays of the packet as it travels through the possible routes. The traceroute command also displays the names and addresses of the routers and devices on the path and the time taken to send or receive data to or from the devices. Traceroute command is often used by network administrators to diagnose a network problem. Please note that the traceroute command-line tool is used in the Linux operating system and the equivalent tool in the Windows operating system is the tracert.
How does traceroute work and how to use the command with various command-line options? In this article, we would discuss that in detail.
