What is Operations Security (OPSEC)?
Operations security (OPSEC) is a security and risk management process that protects sensitive information from falling into the hands of unauthorized parties or attackers. Operations security (OPSEC) involves identifying what needs to be protected and then taking proper security measures to protect the information.
Operations Security Process
The operations security process involves the following five steps.
1. Identification of critical information
In the first step of the operations security process, one has to identify what needs to be protected. For example, if a company makes soft drinks, then the secret recipe of the soft drink needs to be protected so that no unauthorized parties can obtain the secret recipe.
Similarly, for a software company, the proprietary source code needs to be protected from unauthorized parties.
2. Analysis of threats
In this step, one has to analyze the threats associated with the critical information that was identified in the first step of the operations security process.
