What are data anonymization and pseudonymization?
Data anonymization and pseudonymization are done to protect the privacy of users. In the data anonymization process, personally identifiable information of users is removed or processed in such a way that users whose data are processed remain anonymous. In other words, it becomes infeasible to identify the users from anonymized data.
Pseudonymization is a process in which personally identifiable data fields are replaced with artificial identifiers or pseudonyms so that it is difficult to identify the individuals from the pseudonymized data without cross-referencing the data with other sources.
The process in which anonymized data are cross-referenced with other data to reidentify the individuals is called de-anonymization.
Data anonymization and pseudonymization are important to protect the privacy of users and to comply with certain regulatory compliances like the GDPR.
