What is Defense in Depth?
In the medieval era, there used to be multiple layers of security in a castle. The multiple layers of security used to make sure it takes months for an attacker to penetrate the layers of security. A similar concept is used in cybersecurity. And, we call it Defense in Depth or Castle Approach.
Defense in Depth (DiD) or Castle Approach is an approach in which multiple cybersecurity mechanisms are applied in layers to protect valuable data and information. A single security approach is not always enough. If there is a single layer of defense and an attacker manages to circumvent that, thwarting the cyberattack will be difficult. The intention of defense in depth is, even if an attacker manages to circumvent one layer of defense, the other layers will be able to thwart the cyberattack.
