There are a number of secure webmail providers. Many of them use end-to-end encryption which makes the encrypted communications more secure. These secure emails may prove to be a good option if you want to send encrypted message to someone.

 

1. ProtonMail

Features :

  • ProtonMail uses end-to-end encryption. As a result, only the sender and recipient of the encrypted email can read it. Even the service provider does not have access to the secret keys using which the emails are encrypted.
  • One can set emails to expire after certain length of time after which the email will become unreadable.
  • ProtonMail uses PGP to encrypt messages.
  • It does not support IMAP and POP.
  • It is easy to use.
Price : ProtonMail is an Open Source software. The basic version is free. But, one can upgrade to paid plans for better features. Paid plans vary from 4 euro per month to 30 euro per month.

 

2. Hushmail

Features :

  • Using Hushmail one can send encrypted emails to both Hushmail users and non-users.
  • If the recipient is a Hushmail user, the email will be automatically encrypted and sent.
  • If the recipient is not a Hushmail user, the sender can select a security question.
  • The recipient will get a link in his inbox on clicking on which the recipient has to provide a secret passphrase. The user can use the same secret passphrase to read all encrypted messages sent by Hushmail. A first time user has to create a passphrase.
  • On providing passphrase, the recipient will be asked to answer the security question set by the sender of the encrypted email following which he can read the email.
  • Hushmail supports POP and IMAP.
  • It also supports 2 Factor Authentication for better security.
  • It includes a spam filter.
  • One can also enable auto-responder.

3. Tutanota

Features :

  • Tutanota is an Open Source Software under GPL License.
  • It uses end-to-end encryption to send encrypted messages.
  • One can send encrypted messages to Tutanota users as well as non-users.
  • If a sender is sending an encrypted message to a Tutanota non-user, the sender would need to specify a password at the time of encryption and provide the password to the recipient using some different channel.
  • The recipient would need to provide the password to decrypt and read the encrypted message.

Price : The basic version is free with 1 GB of storage and no aliases.

Premium account is 1 euro per month with 5 aliases.

With some features like using and loggin in Tutanota from one’s own domain will cost 2 euro per month.

 

4. Posteo

Features :

  • Posteo provides 2 GB storage by default.
  • It supports IMAP and POP3.
  • It supports 2 Factor Authentication for better security.
  • Attachment of up to 50 MB is supported.
  • It provides spam filter and virus filter.
  • It also supports forwarding and autoreply.

5. Mailfence

Features :

  • Mailfence uses end-to-end encryption for encrypting emails.
  • It is inter-oparable with any OpenPGP service.
  • It provides the option of digitally signing an email, which can guarantee that only the authorized user has sent the email.

Features :
