How to encrypt Gmail and other emails using plugins and extensions ?
There are a number of plugins and extensions available that can be used to sending encrypted emails to someone. They usually work in the following way :
- One has to install the extension in the browser.
- After composing the email as usual, the user has to provide a strong password and encrypt it.
- The recipient would need the same password to decrypt and read it.
- Please note that both the sender and the recipient would need to install the plugin for encrypted email communications.
There are a number of plugins available for various browsers like Encipher It, SecureMail for Gmail, Virtru etc. But, we would strongly recommend to use PGP or GPG instead for encrypting emails using these tools, as using PGP or GPG is quite easy and it is very secure.
How to encrypt emails using PGP or GPG ?
The easiest option will be using Enigmail add-on in Thunderbird.
- A user has to install Thunderbird. In many OS like some Linux versions it comes pre-installed.
- Install Enigmail add-on in Thunderbird. You can follow the steps mention here for installation : Installation of Enigmail
- Now, you can create a GPG key pair. GPG is an Open Source alternative to PGP. If GPG is not already installed, you can get the installation instructions here : How to install GPG ?
- Now, you would need to configure Enigmail using your GPG key id. You would get the instructions for doing that here.
- Please note that both the sender and the recipient of the encrypted message need to import each other’s public keys. You can find more information on using GPG here : What is PGP ?
One good thing about using GPG is, you can use the same key pair for encrypting your files, folders and even for digitally sign a document. And it is very secure. No one other than the intended recipient will be able to read your encrypted message provided you keep your private key secret.
